Athens Trip 2025 Supermarkets and Food

Updated: May 13

Having recently travelled to Athens, I was able to spend time visiting several different stores and eating in different places. This blog captures my finds from the trip.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Fresh fruit and vegetables were definitely not hard to come across; every store had a wonderfully diverse selection, regardless of the store size. There was a fresh fruit and vegetable market that appeared one day and even in the main tourist square, there was a stall selling oranges, strawberries and bananas. It was highly accessible, visually appealing, and felt naturally integrated into everyday diets.

Counters

Counters were prevalent with a vast choice of fresh fish and meat but also including greek specialities including feta, olives and bakery items.

Stripped back Packaging

At times, a lot of the packaging appeared very minimal and stripped back. As you can see from the cheese fixture image below, it felt challenging to shop and make choices with such limited labelling and branding.

Beautiful Bakeries

There were bakeries everywhere and each one was incredibly abundant in the choices on offer.

Added Value Convenience

Added value convenience categories were present but with less store space than you would see in the UK. Packaging often was fully sleeved with printed product photography but with very limited visibility of the product itself.

Dips and salad items were presented in tubs and labelled as long life products. Our consumer expectation in the UK would be a shelf life of several days for dips and salad items, however these had weeks of product life and were in much larger pack formats.

Dubai Chocolate

The Dubai Chocolate Trend could be found in Greece too. Many of the bakeries and ice cream parlours featured the on trend flavour.

Interesting finds

Small convenience stores offered small packs of tea and 10 bags in a pack felt like the perfect size.

I'm forever curious about canned food items and this photo features some some canned Californian squid.

Overall Athens was a great place to explore stores and eat freshly made food which was often packed with vegetables. It was so interesting to be able to walk round the supermarkets and see how things can be done differently, gain ideas and be curious as to why they are different.
